Frequently Asked Questions about Veneers

Is Dr. Olsen certified to place veneers? Roughly how many of these procedures has he done?
In Cosmetic Dentistry, no specialty areas are recognized, and there is no certification to place veneers. We learn the current method while in dental school. Because the techniques and materials have changed dramatically over the past 20 years, a dentist must keep up with the times. Dr. Olsen has worked hard to stay up-to-date over the years by regularly attending continuing education courses from local, state and national dental societies. He has also attended courses through private companies in order to stay abreast of the latest and greatest in dentistry.

Over the past 18 months, Dr. Olsen has taken courses from The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies in Las Vegas, NV to learn the newest protocols and materials from a teaching institution dedicated to Neuromuscular Science and Cosmetic Dentistry. This training has required extensive personal study, and Dr. Olsen has actually taken some patients out to Las Vegas to perform the work there. Dr. Olsen has completed and received credit for the Core I, II, III, and IV courses; he will soon travel to LVI to focus on full mouth reconstruction and laser surgery. The protocols learned will enhance Dr. Olsen’s skills at providing full mouth reconstruction for very complex cases.

Over the years, Dr. Olsen has over 400 direct and indirect veneers. He feels that the most challenging and crucial part of the job is knowing about in the most advanced materials and techniques during the planning, selection, and placement, bonding and finishing of veneers.

Is Dr. Olsen certified in laser gingivectomy? Roughly how many of these procedures has he done?
Dr. Olsen achieved his certification for soft tissue procedures on Feb. 27, 2009 after taking two lecture/hands-on introductory courses during 2008, and then taking the 8-hour certification course and exam on Feb. 27th 2009. The course and testing were provided by DDS Ventures, Inc. and Advanced Laser Training, Inc. under the direction of Dr. Chris Owen. The AGD # for the training is 305699.

He purchased a soft tissue diode laser in December of 2008 and has completed approximately 110 procedures with this laser since that time. Most of these procedures have been confined to single tooth gingivectomy (or gingival contouring). Several of our patients have undergone much more comprehensive laser treatment, such as frenecotomy, fibroma removal, apthous ulcer treatments, periodontal curettage, and herpetic ulcer treatments. Dr. Olsen has also completed several comprehensive gingivectomy procedures. These cases have been associated with cosmetic crown and porcelain veneer procedures, involving as few as six teeth to as many as 14 teeth – all in one visit.

If I have a problem with the placement or positioning of the veneers, will it be replaced at no charge to me?
Our team will recognize and issues right away. If one of your veneers cracks or fractures for any reason, Dr. Olsen will replace it at no charge for one year. If trauma occurs because of a parafunctional habit such as teeth grinding, bruxism, or clenching, then the dentist will recommend that you wear a bite splint at night time to protect the porcelain from potential fracture. If you purchase the splint, and use it as directed, Dr. Olsen will replace the veneers if they fail for five years from date of placement for the cost of the lab fee only, approximately $300 per tooth.
